Sri Lankan born British artist Anton Ratnayake has been exhibiting his work for many years in London, Essex and Suffolk. With many successful solo exhibitions in recent years, this one man show will feature a series of compositions in oils, watercolour and drawings of animals and South East Asian classical and folk dancers.

The works are being exhibited for the first time at the Smithfield Gallery. 50% of the proceeds of all sales will be donated to the charities of ‘The Worshipful Company of Information Technologists.’

As a Freeman and Liveryman of The City of London with The Worshipful Company of Information Technologists, Anton Ratnayake is both delighted and proud to support the charities of his livery company with his exhibition.

James Foot

The watercolours that James Foot predominantly makes today are all about light- how form, architecture, landscape and water are transformed and dissolved by illumination and reflection. His subjects have ranged from the very ordinary- a single chair, an urn, a doorway- to grand vistas and cityscapes. Venice, Milan, Rouen and London have all come under his scrutiny.

His works display an ethusiasm for everything around him and invite the viewer to observe both the actual painting and the environment that inspired it. Whther the play of soft dappled sunlight on the ancient and twisted trunk of a favourite olive tree, a pair of rustic chairs facing each other across a table or a market redolent with spice and odour, they convey a freshness that reflects the talent of the artist of light and shadow, colour and subtlety.

Born in 1960, James Foot is a watercolour painter who studied at Falmouth and Canterbury. He has hosted various solo and group shows in London, Spain, Greece and the U.S. and has undertaken commissions for: Shakepeare’s Globe Theatre, the Houses of Parliament, St. Pancras Parish Church, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the Government of Gibralter, te Royal London Hospital, St. Bartholomew’s Hospital and the London Chest Hospital. One of his most significant early commissions was a painting of the hand-over ceremony of Hong Kong to China in 1997. His figurative painting came via a route of experimental work in other media and his watercolours are infused with these experiences. He is much travelled in America, Africa and Europe, and now spends much of his time in Southern Greece, where he as a home, as he does in London.

Eight Fingers No Thumbs showcases the perspectives of eight emerging designers working within the field of textiles. All eight designers are currently undertaking an MA at the Royal College of Art, an experience that has both extended and challenged their methods and ideas of working. The breadth of work on the show, from striking accessories to interior surfaces to imagined garments of the future, demonstrates the current diversity of thinking within textiles design, extending our understanding of where such disaciplinary boundaries currently lie.

Paul Brown, the much-acclaimed contemporary painter, returns to host this, his fifth Smithfield exhibition of paintings – a stunning new selection of around 24 works.

There are always plenty of beach scenes to be found in Paul Brown’s work and this exhibition includes coastal scenes around St Ives, East Head and, further afield, Venice and Barbados.

In June 2008 a painting by Paul Brown fetched £44,000 in an auction to raise money for the Starlight Children’s Foundation. So instead of leaving your money in the bank or stocks and shares indulge in a tangible asset and put a Paul Brown painting on your wall!

This exhibition includes landscapes from: East Sussex, Venice, Cornwall, Barbados, London and Paris.

United Visual Artists host their first solo exhibition

United Visual Artists are best known for their large-scale light-based installations made for an eclectic range of clients from Tate Modern to Giorgio Armani, as well as concert visuals for Massive Attack. For the collective’s first UK solo exhibition however, they have created a series (titled Deus) of still-images, displayed on lightboxes.

“Most of our light works are experiential, set in the real world for people to touch, feel and interact with; they’re here today, gone tomorrow,” say Matt Clark and James Medcraft of uva, who created Deus. “The challenge we set ourselves with this exhibition was to distill these explorations with light into single images, while retaining the emotive quality of our installation work.

“The exhibition will contain a series of large-scale photographic prints which explore the effect of artificial light on the natural landscape,” the pair say. “We travelled to the darkest depths of Britain, looking for places that had been influenced by man’s intervention but never artificially illluminated. Introducing the artificial light had a transforming effect, literally creating a new place that only existed momentarily.
